Embrace the Journey

Our Grade 9 girls embark on an epic trip to the Drakensberg in the third term each year, covering a distance of roughly 200 km.

According to our girls, uHambo is…

Extraordinary

Unforgettable

Life-changing

Humbling

The three-week adventure is known as uHambo, which means “journey” in isiZulu – an apt name since this trip is a physical, spiritual and emotional journey for the girls. It is a compulsory part of the Grade 9 curriculum.
The intention of uHambo is to promote an opportunity to develop tolerance, gratitude, perseverance and endurance, while encouraging environmental awareness and respect. This enriching experience provides a brief respite from our fast-paced, often superficial, consumerist society.

What our girls have to say about the experience…

What our girls have to say about the experience…

uHambo was an utterly unique adventure filled with emotion, different experiences and new discoveries.

What our girls have to say about the experience…

uHambo taught each of us many things, like being grateful and appreciative, but the lesson that stood out the most was that, like the distance we had to walk each day, a limit is only something that you impose on yourself. We are all stronger than we think!

What our girls have to say about the experience…

uHambo was an incredible opportunity that left us feeling closer to one another, humbled and inspired.

What our girls have to say about the experience…

uHambo is not just a physical journey of hiking, cycling and horse-rising, but a journey of self-discovery and growth. We quickly learnt that our attitudes would determine our outcome.

What our girls have to say about the experience…

On uHambo, we learnt the value of endurance, perseverance and gratitude.

A personal journey
of self-discovery

We asked some of our girls what they learnt from uHambo. This is what they said…

I am stronger than I think.

To enjoy and live in the moment.

The world does not revolve around me.

A positive attitude makes all the difference.

Your limit is beyond what you think it is.
