Our philosophy is to make our boarding community a second family for the girls. Our belief is that happy girls are better able to flourish and reach their full potential. For this reason, we aim to maintain an environment that is nurturing, accepting of difference, safe and supportive. Each girl is a significant part of our community at St John’s D.S.G.
We provide a comfortable and homely boarding environment for all girls from Grade 8 to Grade 12 in a weekly or a termly boarding capacity. Within our Senior School we currently have a 55% day girl to 45% boarder split.
All grades in the Senior School have their own common rooms which are open to both day girls and boarders to allow for important friendships between the two groups. All our nutritious meals are caringly provided by our in-house catering team who can accommodate for all dietary requirements (except Halaal).
Pastoral Care is provided by our Head of Boarding, House Mothers and numerous Boarder Mistresses, all of whom reside with the girls in the boarding establishment. The school has two Clinic Sisters, a School Counsellor and Lady Chaplain to assist our girls where needed.
Prep Sessions for all boarders from Grades 8 – Grade 10 are completed within the class rooms of the R-Block while girls in Grade 11 and Grade 12 are able to see to prep in their rooms. Laptop computers and tablets are allowed, however they do need to be handed in at bedtime. There are computer resource rooms available to girls located in the boarding establishment, should they need.
For the termly boarders, many enjoyable outing activities are planned for the weekends to keep the girls entertained as well as social events with other boarding schools around Pietermaritzburg. All transport for the boarders is provided by the school transport department.
We strongly promote self and mutual respect as our girls live and grow together, forming friendships which remain with them for life.
