Senior Primary: Grade 4 - 7

Theme teaching and cross-curricular activities are encouraged and girls have access to specialist teachers in Music, Art, Drama, Computer Studies, Remedial Education, Physical Education and IsiZulu. St John’s D.S.G. aims to stay abreast with educational trends that are of benefit to the cognitive and the developmental stages of the girls.

Creative and critical thinking skills are encouraged to help with problem-solving to create co-operative learners and allow each girl to reach her true potential.

Additional languages (IsiZulu and Afrikaans) are offered to the girls, thus preparing the girls to make an informed choice of language in Senior School.

Class music is offered to all girls in Grades 4-7. The curriculum consists of music appreciation, music theory, history of music and movement to music, to name a few. The Senior Primary girls also have the opportunity to participate in the Senior Primary School Choir and Marimba Band.

St John’s D.S.G. is in the fortunate position of having a specialist drama teacher. Throughout the year, all the Junior School girls have the opportunity to be involved in various class assemblies, which allows them to use the skills they have learnt during class in front of an audience. Both the girls and their parents thoroughly enjoy these assemblies. The Senior Primary girls participate in a school production every second year.

Art is a much-enjoyed subject at St John’s D.S.G. and Grades 4-7 enjoy their art lessons with our specialist art teachers.

Sport is also a much-loved activity at St John’s D.S.G., where the girls are eager to get involved in range of sporting disciplines. As St John’s D.S.G. is a small school, our focus is on the involvement and participation of the girls rather than winning at all costs, however results show that we do excel and achieve in a great number of sporting activities. The School also offers specialist swimming and tennis coaching and ballet lessons privately, if girls want to add extension lessons onto the sporting programme that the school already offers.

At St John’s D.S.G., Christian worship, values and principles are the foundation of the school life. Grades 4-7 attend a weekly chapel service, as well as weekly class time with the school chaplain, Rev. Diane Pickford. Rev. Pickford is also available to the girls for pastoral guidance, counselling and support.

In keeping with our ethos of caring for others, St John’s D.S.G. believes that girls should become involved from a young age in various charitable organisations. The Junior School partakes in various recycling initiatives and fundraising events through Civvies Days, and the money raised from these events is donated to many charities around our city. This enables the girls to learn about self-sacrifice and the satisfaction of “doing good” for the benefit for others, as well as caring for our environment.

The School provides a complimentary after-school care programme between 12h15 – 17h00 from Monday to Friday. Those girls not attending sport for the afternoon will join the Prep session available between 14h00 – 17h00.
