Interview with Director, Kelly Moore

Kelly Moore is the final of our Matric girls, directing a play entitled “No Exit” for our 2018 Theatre production, Young Directors’ Season.

“Ever since I can remember, I have always been passionate about Theatre and the Dramatic Arts. I have, therefore, taken part of every St John’s D.S.G. Dramatic Arts production I could sign up for (including playing Happy the Dwarf when I was in Grade 6!), and I have loved every minute of the production process, every single time.

I remember always admiring how Ms Keevy put her all into each production she directed, and the incredible outcome she never failed to achieve. I am well aware, therefore, that the other three directors and I have very big shoes to fill this year! Although I could always see how busy she was, it is only now, standing in these shoes, that I realize the level of commitment, passion, and utter hard work that this role requires.

After handing in my Directorial Proposal, I was ecstatic and honoured to receive the message telling me that I was going to be one of the directors. Therefore, under the mentorship of PAK member, Chase, I am directing an adaption of the play No Exit, written by the French philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre. In this play, Sartre is exploring one of his many concepts – the significance of choice and the consequences of those choices. Throughout the piece Sartre is communicating his belief that the choices you make on a day to day basis ultimately make you who you are, and I think this is a very important concept for every member in the audience to internalize.

A few ago, we held our separate auditions, followed by call-backs, in which girls had to recite certain monologues from the play. After this process, I decided my final cast will be Sarah Tocknell Mia Geyser (Grade 11), Shannon Hein (Grade 10), Tswelopele Mfusi (Grade 10) and Sara Muil (Grade 8). I am very confident in these girls’ fantastic abilities and am very excited to work hard with them and watch them grow over the next term!
