We are delighted to have witnessed the determination, courage and team spirit that our Senior School swimming squad have shown this term, particularly at the Senior Girls’ Relay Gala on Wednesday, 8 March. Our swimming team has won four galas this term – a record for St John’s D.S.G. – and they were the “favourites” to win the Senior Girls’ Relay Gala. However, St John’s D.S.G. placed second (which is still a fantastic achievement!)
Just after the results were announced, something special happened. As the auditorium erupted with cheers, war-cries and the excitement of other schools, it wasn’t the noise that captured attention, but the St John’s D.S.G. supporters sitting on the opposite side of the pool – in absolute silence. Probably sensing the potential disappointment of their friends, our supporters made heart gestures with their hands and held them out towards our amazing swimming team.
“It was such a touching moment,” Miss Kristy Burt, one of our swimming coaches, says. “It was as if the girls were saying, ‘Well done, team. Don’t be sad. You have made us proud.'” Mrs Cara Schirge, our Senior PE Teacher and Sports Organiser, says, “It was a good thing I had my sunglasses on. The tears were flowing!”
Well done to our Senior School swimming team on a fantastic swimming season, as well as their coaches, Mrs Schirge and Mrs Bev Shuttleworth. We would also like to say a huge “thank you” to our girls supporting their friends. You all make us SO proud!
