TOUR TO RUSSIA
On 25 March, Ms Dyson, Mrs
Kidd and 21 girls left a balmy Durban on a twelve-day tour
of Russia and France. Twenty-four hours later, we were excited
to arrive in St Petersburg amidst a brief snowstorm. During
our stay in St Petersburg, we visited various palaces, cathedrals
and museums After our stay in St Petersburg, we boarded
an overnight train to Moscow where we continued learning
about Russian history. After shopping and watching a performance
by the Moscow State Circus, visited Red Square, St Basil's
Cathedral and had a look inside the Kremlin. In Paris we
went all the way up the Eiffel Tower, walked the Champs-Elysees,
spotted the Arc de Triomphe, strode all the way up to Sacre
Coeur and strolled around the Louvre. On 6 April, we arrived
back in Pietermaritzburg with memories and experiences that
will last for years to come! Darsha Indrajith
ST JOHN'S DAY AND GRADE
8 MARKET DAY
SUNDAY 4 MAY
St John's Day was, as always, a resounding
success. The day commenced with a Chapel Service where many
of our "old" girls took communion together. We
were delighted to have Sister Mary Evelyn and Sister Hilary
with us. Our previous Headmistress, Mrs Jill Champion and
her Deputies, Mrs Annette Symes and Mr Max Wotherspoon were
also with us in the Chapel.
|
| The Chapel Service is a very sentimental occasion for both
present and past pupils and the procession was led by our
Head Girl, Zamahlasela Gabela. The Service was led by Reverend
Bellina Mangena and music produced by the School Choir, Musicians
and the Gospel Choir, photographed above, in our School Chapel. |
| After the Chapel Service, the Old Girls' Tea and AGM, the
families of St John's are treated to beautiful music from
an assortment of musicians including our Marimbas and Steel
Drum Band as well as our School Band, and of course our now,
"Old" Girl's father, Chris Jensen. |
|
|
|
As the crowds were entertained with
music on the lawns, the Grade 8 girls worked hard for
their Market Day. They had an array of different stalls
and all the profits from their enterprises went to the
SPCA.

St John's DSG Girls
win Shakespeare Interschools' Quiz - Brush up Your Shakespeare
2008 marked the eighteenth year that
this challenging interschools' event has been held. A
great deal of time and a high level of commitment are
required for participation in this competition. Teams
are required to be familiar with Shakespeare's biographical
details and the Elizabethan Age. They also have to read
and answer questions on twenty-four Shakespearean plays;
prepare a television advertisement with a Shakespearean
theme; and through charades, illustrate quotations from
Shakespeare's plays. It is extremely demanding. In 2007
St John's D.S.G entered two teams, one of which won through
to the quarter-final round. This year two teams were entered
once again and both won through to the quarter-final round
which took place on Sunday, 18 May, at Durban Girls' College.
The Heroes (Emalin Govender, Kristel Ortmann and Supriya
Soorju) were narrowly beaten by Glenwood High School,
the score being 32-39. The Queen's Ladies (Darsha Indrajith,
Kirstin Mackenzie and Lara Perrett) were, however, successful
in winning through to the semi-final round held on Sunday,
25 May. They acquitted themselves very well indeed, winning
through to the Final Round. We congratulate them on emerging
the final winners as they soundly beat Durban Girls' High
by 48 points to 33 . Each girl has won for herself R1
000.00 and the school, too, will receive R1 000.00.
